This question, asked of five School Board candidates grabbed audience attention last night:
As a school board member, will you become:
a) The superintendent’s boss
b) The superintendent’s peer
c) The superintendent’s subordinate
For the record, all five of the school board candidates present at Thursday’s League of Women Voters candidate forum answered that they would act as the superintendent’s boss, if elected to the board.
Gale Hairston answered, “In education school we weren’t told to be rubber stamps for superintendents. We were told to follow our beliefs.”
Schools Superintendent Phyllis Chase did not attend the forum.
It seems like a group of community members see the district as falling short, and are anxious to lay the blame on one, or a very small group of people.
Is that fair? Or is there a larger issue at work?
See Friday’s morning paper for more.
